Grid connection point Unterweser: With a transmission capacity of 2 x 2 Gigawatt (GW) BalWin4 & LanWin1 will provide green wind power from the North Sea for up to 5 million households. The first grid connection will already go into operation in 2029.

Grid connection point Wilhelmshaven2: With a transmission capacity of 2 x 2 Gigawatt (GW) BalWin3 & LanWin4 will provide green wind power from the North Sea for up to 5 million households. Both grid connection systems will go into operation in 2031.

NordLink NordLink - the "green link" for exchanging German wind energy with Norwegian hydropower - is a connection of two optimally complementary systems. NordLink is a lighthouse project and an enormously important building block of the European energy transition to compensate for dark periods and at the same time to make green energy available safely and affordably in the EU.

Interconnection

Since 2019 the Danish and Dutch high-voltage grid are interconnected via a high-voltage direct current submarine cable, the COBRAcable. The interconnector has a capacity of 700 MW and is around 325 kilometres long.

Nordergründe is the third project within the twelve nautical mile zone of Lower Saxony for which TenneT has implemented a three-phase grid connection. This is both technically and economically the most efficient solution, as the Nordergründe wind farm is only around 30 kilometres from the coast.

Riffgat is the second offshore grid connection that TenneT has connected to the transmission grid in Germany using three-phase current (AC) technology. The wind farm of the same name is located within the twelve nautical mile zone of Lower Saxony, about 15 kilometers northwest of the East Frisian island of Borkum and thus about 50 kilometers from the coast. Due to the proximity to the mainland and the installed total output of 113 megawatts (MW), it was technically and economically most efficient to realize Riffgat as an individual three-phase current connection.

In April 2015, TenneT commissioned SylWin1, currently the longest offshore grid connection in the world. SylWin1 connects three wind farms 70 kilometres off the coast of Sylt to the mainland.

With HelWin1, TenneT has completed a 130 km long and 576 megawatt (MW) direct current grid connection near the North Sea island of Helgoland.

HelWin2 is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system with a capacity of 690 MW.

BorWin6 is the fifth project that TenneT is implementing off the coast of Borkum using extra-high voltage direct current transmission technology, in addition to the BorWin1, BorWin2, BorWin3  and BorWin5 projects.

BorWin5 is the fourth project that TenneT is implementing off the coast of Borkum using extra-high voltage direct current transmission technology, in addition to the BorWin1, BorWin2 and BorWin3 projects.

Alongside the grid connection projects BorWin1 and BorWin2, BorWin3 is the third project that TenneT has implemented off the coast of Borkum using direct current technology.

With a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), BorWin2, together with HelWin1 (576 MW), is the first large-scale offshore connection that TenneT has realised, enabling more than one offshore wind farm to be connected to the power grid for the first time.

BorWin1 is the very first grid connection with which TenneT has connected a wind farm to the electricity grid using direct current technology.

In May 2009, TenneT realised the first grid connection at sea in Germany with alpha ventus. This grid connection marks the beginning of the era of offshore wind energy, because with alpha ventus, energy generated at sea could be fed into the German power grid for the first time.

In July 2017 TenneT commissioned the construction of the project DolWin6. Completion is scheduled for 2023. DolWin6 is a 900 megawatt DC connection.

In the DolWin5 project, TenneT is installing an offshore grid connection system in the North Sea with a capacity of 900 MW using extra-high voltage direct current transmission technology.

The DolWin3 project is the third offshore grid connection in the so-called DolWin cluster. The offshore grid connection connects two wind farms in the south-western part of the German North Sea with the onshore transmission grid. Around 160 kilometers of cable were laid for this purpose: 80 kilometers each at sea and on land.

Since 2016, three wind farms have been connected to the transmission grid via the 135-kilometre long DolWin2 grid connection.

The Dutch and Norwegian electricity grids have been interconnected by the NorNed cable since 2008. The NorNed cable is 580 km long and has a capacity of 700 MW, making TenneT and our Norwegian counterpart Statnett the joint owners of the world’s longest high-voltage subsea direct current link.

The BritNed cable connects the Dutch and British energy markets.

DolWin1 is the first offshore project that TenneT has realised off the bay of Dollart - in the so-called DolWin cluster. Since 2015, up to 800 megawatts (MW) of electricity have been transported over a distance of 165 kilometres through the North Sea and across the mainland using the powerful DolWin1 high-voltage direct current connection.
