Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With around 23,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

TenneT expands Supervisory Board, strengthening its European energy business experience

TenneT has appointed three new members to its Supervisory Board: Edna Schöne, Essimari Kairisto and Stijn van Els. They will take up their new roles as per 1 May 2019.

With these appointments, TenneT strengthens its capabilities, knowledge and European experience in the face of its major challenges presented by the energy transition in the Netherlands and Germany.

Edna Schöne

Edna Schöne (German, 1971) is a Member of the Board of Euler Hermes AG, part of the world's largest credit insurer Euler Hermes, fully owned by Allianz Group. Being responsible for the Export Promotion Scheme that her company runs for the German Federal Government, Edna is very familiar with operating in a state regulated business. As the responsible Board Member for Government Business, Legal and Compliance, she has solid relations in the public sector and with the German Government and Administration in Berlin.

Essimari Kairisto

Essimari Kairisto (Finnish/German,1966) can look back on a long and successful international career as CFO, among others in the energy, chemical and construction industries (e.g. RWE Group, Sasol, HOCHTIEF Solutions AG). She is currently a member of the Supervisory Board of Fortum OYJ, a leading Finnish energy company, with the Finnish state as majority shareholder, that develops sustainable energy solutions in electricity, heating, cooling and resource efficiency. Next to that she is member of the Supervisory Board of Freudenberg, a global technology company driving forward-looking innovations.

Stijn van Els

Stijn van Els (Dutch,1965)had a 30-year career at Shell. In his last active role he was CEO  of Shell Germany. Before that he held positions for Shell in the Netherlands, Japan, England, Australia and Qatar. He brings a wealth of experience in overseeing large capital projects and a deep understanding of the energy markets and the potential of sector coupling. Over the years, he has developed an wide international and German network and gained first-hand experience in the German energy transition.


As of 1 May 2019, TenneT's Supervisory Board will consist of seven members, three of whom are women: Stijn van Els, Laetitia Griffith, Essimari Kairisto, Edna Schöne, Ab van der Touw (chair), Pieter Verboom and Rien Zwitserloot.
