Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With around 23,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

TenneT awards contract for Hollandse Kust (zuid) offshore grid project to Van Oord and Hellenic Cables

TenneT has selected the Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects / Hellenic Cables consortium to supply and install 220 kV subsea and onshore cables for TenneT’s Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha project, an offshore wind farm zone being developed in the North Sea. The cables will have a total capacity of 700 MW. 

At the same time as this cable contract was awarded, LMR Drilling GmbH was selected as the winning tenderer for the horizontal directional drilling of four 550-metre-long pipeline sections as part of the same project.

The cable contract was awarded to a consortium consisting of Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects B.V. and Hellenic Cables S.A, and includes the design, manufacture and installation of 220 kV subsea and onshore cables, and connecting these cables to the Maasvlakte high voltage substation. The consortium is also the preferred contractor for the supply and installation of cables for the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Beta wind farm zone. The realization of a 66 kV subsea cable between the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha and Beta offshore platforms has been included as an option in the contract. The Alpha platform is scheduled for completion in 2021, the Beta platform in 2022. Following the Borssele Offshore Wind Farm Zone, the Hollandse Kust (zuid) project provides for the construction of the third and fourth major grid connections for offshore wind energy in the Netherlands.

TenneT CEO Manon van Beek commented: “This new offshore grid contract conforms to the timeline set out in the Dutch National Energy Agreement, and represents another important step towards the development of large-scale offshore electricity production capacity. TenneT, and therefore the Netherlands as a whole, is well on track to realize 3.5 gigawatts of additional offshore wind farms, increasing the total offshore capacity to approx. 4.5 gigawatts by 2023.” 


LMR Drilling GmbH will perform the controlled drilling work for four pipeline sections below the seawall south of the Maasgeul channel. These pipelines will ensure that the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha and Beta offshore platforms can be safely connected via cables to the Maasvlakte onshore high-voltage substation. The controlled drilling activities will be performed in the course of 2019. 

Offshore wind energy in the North Sea

TenneT has been officially designated as the offshore grid operator in both the Netherlands and Germany, and will contribute to the implementation of the Dutch National Energy Agreement by developing offshore grid connections with a total capacity of at least 3,500 MW during the period until 2023. These connections will be constructed in accordance with a standardized concept and will have a capacity of 700 MW each. The tender procedure for the subsea cables and platforms for the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore grid project will start towards the end of 2018. In accordance with the new Roadmap for Offshore Wind Energy, a further 7,000 MW of offshore wind energy capacity is expected to be constructed and connected to the grid by TenneT in the 2024-2030 period.

Hollandse Kust (zuid) Beta:

  • Approx. 34-km-long route section from the Maasvlakte onshore substation to the Hollandse Kust (zuid) Alpha offshore platform
  • Approx. 8-km-long route section from the Alpha platform to the Beta platform
  • Two 220 kV subsea cables with a capacity of 350 MW each, connecting the two offshore platforms to the onshore substation
  • One 66 kV subsea cable linking the two platforms
