Our key tasks

We are primarily tasked with providing power transmission services, system services and facilitating the energy market. Our core tasks follow from our appointment as grid operator under the Dutch 'Elektriciteitswet' (E-wet) and the German 'Energiewirtschaftsgesetz' (EnWG).

Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

Prices for balancing energy

The tariff system for the balancing services provided by a Balancing Group Manager (BGM) is a pricing system with the following features:

  • The balancing energy prices to balance the balancing group deviations are calculated for every ¼ hour. A uniform balancing energy price (reBAP) has been in place throughout Germany since 01/06/2010.
  • The balancing energy prices are generally determined from the payments or receipts of the TSO for the control energy used (secondary and tertiary control energy).
  • Symmetrical price for every ¼ hour, i.e. no price spread between positive and negative balancing group deviations.
  • The balancing energy price may also be negative due to the introduction of negative energy prices for tertiary and secondary control power and may therefore also lead to costs for balancing groups with excess supply for example.

Decision BNetzA BK6-12-024 (69 KB, pdf, 05/23/2016)

01/12/2012. The German transmission system operators (TSO) implement the decision to develop the balancing energy price invoicing system. Significant changes to the existing system include the coupling of the reBAP to the exchange price and the application of either a surcharge or discount on the AEP if 80% of the contracted control power in Germany is exceeded, depending on the sign of the balance of the control energy used.
