Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With over 22,500 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

Planet targets

We have long-term ambitions for circularity, the climate and nature, each of which is connected to a specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The tables below show how our sustainable development is both transparent and measurable. Unless stated otherwise, the following tables show aggregated data for the Netherlands and Germany.

Circularity

For TenneT, circularity is about minimising our use of scarce materials, reusing materials and reducing waste in our operations. Our circularity ambition contributes to SDG 12 by supporting sustainable consumption and production practices.

We are in the process of defining and concretizing our ambitions for circularity. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months. In the meantime, have a read of our supply chain challenges in our the Annual Report.

Climate

We are responsible for the impact of our operations on the climate. Our climate ambition contributes to SDG 13, which seeks to combat climate change and its impact.

Over 95% of TenneT’s CO2 footprint is due to grid losses. Grid losses are calculated as the difference between the amount of produced electricity entering our transmission system and the amount that leaves for consumption. For an overview of the historic development of grid losses, click here.
The leakage of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) also contributes to TenneT’s CO2 footprint. SF6 gas is used in high-voltage equipment on substations because it is an excellent electrical insulator and interrupts currents in circuit breakers. However, SF6 is a major greenhouse gas. As such, we started a pioneering pilot in Germany to use an alternative to SF6 at our Frankfurt North substation.

Nature

In our commitment to nature, we aim to minimise our environmental impact and protect local nature. Our nature ambition contributes to SDG 14 and SDG 15 by encouraging ecosystems and biodiversity on land and the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

Leakages of oil used in our transformers and cables cause an unfortunate local environmental impact. We recognise that we have a responsibility to take care of the natural environment and as such are transparent about the oil leakages and environmental incidents resulting from our work. The increase in oil leakages in 2017 compared to 2016 is mainly due to a cable failure in the west of the Netherlands. For new projects, we use polyethylene cables which do not contain any oil. The decrease in environmental incidents compared to 2016 is due to fewer offshore construction activities.

Our Commitment to Nature (currently only available in Dutch) underlines our approach to nature, illustrating our responsibility to minimise our environmental impact and protect and improve local nature. We do this not only because legislation or regulations requires it, but because we are genuinely committed to the people and nature in the environment in which we operate.
