Our key tasks

We are primarily tasked with providing power transmission services, system services and facilitating the energy market. Our core tasks follow from our appointment as grid operator under the Dutch 'Elektriciteitswet' (E-wet) and the German 'Energiewirtschaftsgesetz' (EnWG).

Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With over 22,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

Transparency data

We provide transparency data on our operations on our Dutch and German transparency page and on ENTSO-E.

About transport services

TenneT transports electricity along the high-voltage grid from where it is produced to where it is consumed.

Our tasks

TenneT transports electricity along the high-voltage grid from where it is produced to where it is consumed. We carry out a number of tasks to keep electricity flowing smoothly and without disruption. These include:

  • resolving any  transmission hindrances;
  • compensating for grid losses;
  • maintaining the voltage and reactive power supply;
  • managing and maintaining the national high-voltage grid;
  • collaborating with regional grid administrators and neighbouring countries.

TenneT is not the only grid operator that transports energy. The regional grid operators also provide this service to the parties connected to their grids, including households. However, we are the only grid operator in the Netherlands with the capacity to carry electricity across international borders. In Germany TenneT is one of the 4 TSOs.

Transmission fees

The transmission fee covers the costs incurred by grid administrators for transporting electricity.
