Our key tasks

We are primarily tasked with providing power transmission services, system services and facilitating the energy market. Our core tasks follow from our appointment as grid operator under the Dutch 'Elektriciteitswet' (E-wet) and the German 'Energiewirtschaftsgesetz' (EnWG).

Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With around 22,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

The Audorf-Flensburg project represents a portion of the grid expansion between Lower Saxony and Denmark.

About the project

The increasing amount of renewable energy fed into the grid in Schleswig-Holstein has made it necessary to expand the existing grid structure. The district of Schleswig-Flensburg numbers among the regions of the country that produces the most wind energy. The existing high-voltage line here has long since reached its load limit.

In the Power Grid Expansion Act (EnLAG), the Bundestag called for the 380 kV grid expansion from Dollern in Lower Saxony to Kassö in Denmark already in 2009. The existing 220 kV overhead line must therefore be replaced by a higher-capacity 380 kV overhead line.

The Audorf-Flensburg project represents a portion of the grid expansion between Lower Saxony and Denmark. TenneT is also realizing grid expansion projects between Hamburg/Nord and Dollern and between Audorf and Hamburg/Nord, which together constitute the entire central axis measures. These lines will be critical in the future for the success of the energy transition and contribute to the associated transport of renewable energies into southern Germany.
