Our key tasks

We are primarily tasked with providing power transmission services, system services and facilitating the energy market. Our core tasks follow from our appointment as grid operator under the Dutch 'Elektriciteitswet' (E-wet) and the German 'Energiewirtschaftsgesetz' (EnWG).

Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With over 22,000 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

Programme Offshore Grid

By means of the National Energy Agreement, the Dutch government wants to achieve a substantial increase in the share of wind energy in the Netherlands’ energy mix. To increase offshore wind energy capacity, the government has designated three zones in the North Sea for the development of new wind farms.

Development of the offshore grid concept

Developing the offshore grid could not be done by TenneT single-handedly. Therefore, TenneT started an intensive stakeholder consultation process end of 2014 until end of 2015. The consultation focused on technical and planning issues concerning the design, construction and realisation of the offshore grid infrastructure until 2023. The overall goal of this process is to optimise, together with the stakeholders, the offshore grid configuration and realisation against minimum societal cost. All topics and supporting information can be accessed via the overview below.

Latest developments

Prior to the subsidy tender Borssele III and IV in September 2016 TenneT has published a number of updates:

Questions regarding the offshore grid can be submitted via  netopzee(at)tennet.eu again as of October 2016.

22 June 2016 the Interface Risk Inventory Session was held. This workshop was organised to create an inventory of the main interface risks from the wind farm perspective, to ensure TenneT is aware of all relevant interface topics at an early stage in the development process. TenneT wishes to thank all the participants of the Risk Inventory Session for their valuable contributions. The presentation and the report of the workshop are now available:

Expert meetings

Agenda en minutes of meetings

Expert meetings have been organized every month and attended by a selected group of expert and by invitation only. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the agenda and all relevant background information to the topics discussed are made available online. Background information may include: a document defining the scope (summary of content and considerations), one or more external reports, and a position paper (TenneT's position on the topic at hand). In order to have the expert meetings as efficient as possible, present stakeholders are expected to have read these papers and documentation. This will be the starting point of the consultation.
